A nicer comment interface

Following on from our last post on back end usability improvements, we move onto something that can improve your users experience.

Before getting into the details it's important to understand why Drupal can sometimes suffer from these shall we say, afflictions.

Many of Drupal's modules solve solutions to generic problems. With this in mind module developers tend to come up with generic solutions. Many of the useful modules will get you 90% to where you want to be and although this may seem strange they didn't go the full 100% there are distinct advantages to making modules more generic:

  • Generic solutions tend to be more adaptable
  • Easier interaction with other modules
  • A wider use base means the modules are used and maintained by more members of the community

Wordpress Comments

The default comment form lays out the comment fields above each other and while this might be fine if you are only asking for a persons name, it can get increasingly cluttered and take up too much room if you ask for a users name, email address, website and subject.

this module takes all the labels and places them to the right of the input fields in a similar way to Wordpress. This not only saves space but scans better and should ultimately mean more people decide to leave comments on your sites. Although this can be achieved without using this module and tinkering with the css, this module does it all for you.
